We pick up one year after Season Seven's finale. Dean has finally escaped from Purgatory with Benny the Vampire. Castiel has been left behind within Purgatory with no way out. The time within the new hell has hardened Dean Winchester. What has happened with Sam? Sam spent the first 3 months drinking himself nearly to death and then he has been back and forth between hunting and hanging out with a girl he actually enjoys being with. Sam has very nearly decided on quitting hunting altogether to be with her, but then Bobby showed up out of the clear blue sky with a full memory of everything that had happened.
The new Ruler in Heaven, Ezekiel, resurrected him and brought him back to aide Sam with the coming war. A new war between Angels and Demons and hunters needed to be ready. Bobby and Sam have spent a lot of time together, hunting and attempting to figure out a way to stop the whole war.
Ezekiel was appointed to rule Heaven by God, or so Joshua has said. Some angels still are not sure of their father's decision as their creator had abandoned them long ago, but they still follow Ezekiel's rule. Among resurrecting Bobby Singer, Ezekiel has granted Balthazar, Gabriel and Anna life as well, earning heaven it's Archangels back. Castiel is still missing, having been left within Purgatory because Dean believed him dead.
Jophiel is the new King of Hell, as Lucifer's demon spawn it is his right to rule in his father's absence. More powerful than Crowley, Jophiel was able to de-throne the Crossroad demon and take his place as the new King. His hope? Jophiel wants to do the job his father never could -destroy all heavenly beings and rid the world of hunters. The hunters he wants most are the Winchesters, namely Sam. Most still do not know that Dean has returned from the dead yet again, though as soon as the demons learn he is sure to be on the hit list. Crowley has been demoted back to nothing more than the King of the Crossroads and 'he was lucky to get that' as Jophiel had stated.
Kevin Tran has managed to escape Crowley and is on the run on his own. He hasn't reached out to Sam, fearing the younger Winchester would deny him help since it is his fault that Dean is gone, or so he believes. Kevin has not seen his family or friends in over a year because he fears that Crowley will find him with them and kill them because of it.
In this new chapter of their lives, the Winchesters will gain new friends and enemies. They will lose, they will love, they will keep the fight. Or so we hope.
